Pool Pump Brands: Hayward, Pentair, Intex & Bestway

Hayward

One of the two dominant in-ground pump manufacturers in the U.S. Known lineup includes the TriStar VS (variable-speed), Super Pump VS, and MaxFlo VS. Widely available through pool-supply retailers and generally strong parts availability, which matters when something fails years down the road.

Pentair

The other dominant in-ground brand, competing closely with Hayward on price and efficiency. Known lineup includes the IntelliFlo (their flagship VS line), SuperFlo VS, and WhisperFlo. Pentair pumps are frequently paired with Pentair’s own automation systems (IntelliCenter).

Intex

The leading brand for above-ground and inflatable pool equipment. Krystal Clear pump/filter combo units and sand-filter systems are sized specifically for above-ground volumes — not interchangeable with in-ground pump sizing logic.

Bestway

A budget-friendly above-ground alternative to Intex, with the Flowclear line covering similar pump-and-filter combo territory at a lower price point, with tradeoffs in longevity that are worth understanding before you buy.

Which brand is right for you?

For in-ground pools, Hayward and Pentair are both safe choices — the deciding factors are usually local parts/service availability and which automation ecosystem (if any) you’re already using. For above-ground pools, Intex generally has the edge on parts availability; Bestway can be the better value if you’re not planning to keep the pool up for many seasons.
